Playlist, Week of 2020-12-13

Last week I talked about my plans to dig in deep to Duke Ellington... you can see the beginnings of that in this week's list, wherein I cranked through most of the 10 CDs of the so-called "Private Collection," sessions from Ellington's stockpile of recordings he paid for himself that were released posthumously... I understand that there are lot more of these that have come out since this initial outpouring, and that's an area for future investigation... overall, these discs are wonderful... many earlier versions of pieces that came out, many reworkings of Ellington standards, a revisit to "Black, Brown, and Beige," and two fantastic longer suites ("The Degas Suite" and "The River")... much to explore here... and damn, two of the late suites that were released, The Afro-Eurasian Eclipse and New Orleans Suite, are just brilliant... As my plans for listening in 2021 firm up, I have to say that in addition to Ellington I'll be digging deep (again) into Miles Davis, especially the early stuff... I plan on rereading Jack Chambers's book Milestones as an accompaniment... I feel way more familiar with Miles's work overall than I do with later Ellington... anyway: 2021: Duke and Miles: bring it on!

Playlist, Week of 2020-12-06

Some absolutely brilliant music from Duke Ellington on the Mosaic Capitol box set... after my foray into rediscovery of Charlie Parker of a few weeks back, I am going to start on an in-depth, non-chronological deep dive into Ellington... everything I've pulled out so far in the last few weeks has just reminded me over and over again what a vast wealth of solid amazing music he left for us... many years ago I got in really, really deep with his music from the '20s to the early '40s... I hope to do the same over the coming year with the '50s to the '70s... won't have anything original to add to the discussion but I am still looking forward to it... I won't be listening alone... at some point in here I will also re-read Eddie Lambert's Listening Guide, which is chock full o' great insight and critical acumen... Gary Giddins's essays on Duke in Visions of Jazz, which I revisited this week, are also spot-on... and finally, Brian Morton and Richard Cook in the Penguin Guide to Jazz do a superb job of nailing, over and over, the crucial highlights of all the albums they cover... of course Duke has always been with me (as Bird, Sun Ra, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Coltrane, Miles, Braxton, Cecil, and so many others also always are) on the Magic Jukebox... but this will be a special delving-into, with tons of unexplored goodies as well as happy returns to old friends...

Playlist, Week of 2020-11-29

It's good to cleanse the palate every so often with some brain-scraping noise jazz, and Zu fits the bill, especially with Mats Gustafsson sitting in... WMWM reminds me how great a free drummer Robert Wyatt was... I knew of their first album, but I wasn't even aware there was a second one from Free Range Rat until I read the entry in the Penguin guide... nice sax work from my old UYA bandmate Eric Hipp... Start scratching the Blue Note surface and you'll find Joe Henderson everywhere... he's great on Pete La Roca Sims's Basra... there he is on Herbie Hancock's The Prisoner as well... and, outside the Blue Note universe, he also pops up on Butterfly Dreams... love me some Joe Henderson!

Playlist, Week of 2020-11-22

The new Ingrid Laubrock album is gorgeous... one disc of chamber orchestra with soloists, one with small group, playing (sort of) the same compositions... I think I prefer the chamber orchestra for its dreamy, focus-shifting uncertainty... Firestorm is an unrelenting blast of aggressive fire music... nice to hear Marshall Allen in this context... The Prisoner is a brilliant sedate meditation on the life of Martin Luther King Jr.... a recent discovery for me; wish I'd heard it earlier... As for Coltrane's Blue World, I didn't have a chance to hear it earlier, but I'm glad to hear it now... As I am glad to revisit the lush settings Gil Evans contrives for Miles Davis...

Deerhoof
's latest slew of albums is a lot of fun, but the best of the lot is Love-Lore, an amazing mix of cover tunes which manages to include Sun Ra and Anthony Braxton AND Dionne Warwick AND "The Jetsons" AND P-Funk... starting to sound a lot like the Magic Jukebox!... John Gilmore's work on Pete Sims's Turkish Women at the Bath is nice enough... hell, it's wonderful... but it just confirms for me that Gilmore did his best work with Sun Ra... Nice to hear Robert Wyatt on three of the tracks from the new Code Girl album... as a longtime Wyatt fan, I've been intrigued to read in Mary Halvorson interviews how much she's been inspired by Wyatt, and this new album really nails that inspiration, with his vocals fitting in perfectly with the Code Girl aesthetic already in place from their first album...

Brilliant new recording from Daniel Barbiero: In/Completion... solo double bass renditions of works with graphic scores by Morton Feldman, Cristiano Bocci, and several others, beautifully rendered by Dan... he must have really gotten himself into a sublime meditative state to achieve these... gorgeous and stimulating... easily one of his best albums...

Once again I find myself with not much to say... preoccupied with "current events" is a large part of it, but beyond that, I find that my listening outpaces my intellectual ability to synthesize my reactions... we'll see what happens... stay safe out there, folks, while voting... the fact that I even have to say that speaks volumes... What's Going On indeed...

Playlist, Week of 2020-10-18

I'm struck by how much Tony Williams's late Blue Note compositions sound like the music of the great Miles Davis quintet of the '60s... I was foolish to be disappointed with Foreign Intrigue when I bought it when it first came out... what was I expecting? Lifetime?... the stupidity of youth... and I wonder: what mistakes am I making now?... at any rate, this music now sounds deeply rich and intriguing... I discovered another version of Duke Ellington playing "New World a-Comin'" from the First Sacred Concert, this time a piano solo... I prefer the band version... Haven't heard a lame Charlie Parker solo yet...

Playlist, Week of 2020-10-11

Live at Montreux is one of the all-time greatest Sun Ra records... the whole band's firing on all cylinders, and I love how he integrates acoustic piano with synthesizer... "New World a-Comin'" is an underappreciated (by me, anyway) long-form composition by Duke Ellington, featuring a lot of solo piano... it was recorded several times, but it looks like the only versions I have are a Treasury show from 1946 and a 1945 version on the relatively obscure LP Jazz of the World War 2nd... I feel like I'm slowly working more post-1945 Duke into my listening regime... I may need to reread Eddie Lambert's excellent book Duke Ellington: A Listener's Guide soon... Any record with Ingrid Laubrock or Kris Davis on it is golden... Besides Henry Kaiser's and Wadada Leo Smith's Yo Miles reconstructions, Dave Douglas's Freak In is one of the best explorations of Miles Davis's 1970-1975 sonic territory... it passed me by when it first came out, and I got led to it by the appearance of Craig Taborn... good stuff!

Diving into the King Crimson Larks' Tongues box... to my ears, for most of the live stuff, Jamie Muir is sadly underrecorded... the interaction between him and Bill Bruford is amazing, and Robert Fripp's guitar work is consistently stellar... Digging too the Benny Goodman sides with Charlie Christian... getting all hepped up... I have finally decided: Welcome is my favorite Santana record...

Playlist, Week of 2020-09-20

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, the recent spate of PR around the centennial of Charlie Parker's death spurred me to go back to my Bird collection and do some in-depth listening... not that I stopped listening to Bird; after all, he (like the Beatles) regularly shows up on the Magic Jukebox (most of the Savoy and Dial master takes, plus a healthy helping of Royal Roost and Verve cuts)... but it'd been a while since I just pulled out a Bird disc and spinned it... needless to say, he sounds as great as ever... along with John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Miles Davis, his playing was what got me seriously into jazz in a way that hasn't relented for several decades now... I especially enjoyed this list by Mark Stryker of great live Bird... 20 years or so ago, I put together a 6-CD compilation of great Bird, based largely on Lawrence O. Koch's list of essential Bird in Yardbird Suite and Thomas Owens's list of greatest Bird solos in Bebop: The Music and Its Players... most of those songs are represented on Stryker's list, but there were a few I have since acquired (like the 1940 solo recording)... for live stuff, like I said last week, the Benedetti stuff still floors me... I am also partial to Complete Live at Birdland and Summit Meeting at Birdland... digging through my vinyl, it's been interesting to see what's been upgraded and improved, and what still sounds solid as is... Charlie Parker seems to be imprinted on my brain, and I love it... I go through stages of deep listening to particular artists... the thing is, there are so many of them!... I am absorbed by great music... it was also fun to reread all the reviews on Bird in the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD (5th edition)... Morton and Cook really nail it, I think, over and over...

Playlist, Week of 2020-09-13

Love how the Dead returned to "Dark Star" in the '90s... I'm finding all the chanting on Alice Coltrane's Radha-Krsna Nama Sankirtana strangely relaxing... usually not my cup of tea... I get impatient with the "spiritual" side of world music... Don Cherry's explorations in that realm leave me cold... Got blown away all over again by the utterly amazing playing of the "Lost Quintet" on Miles Davis's Live in Europe 1969... on "Milestones," Miles and Wayne Shorter lead the band in a peppy rendition of the head, with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette swinging as hard as Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones ever did, only for the horns to drop out as Chick Corea pulls the rug out from the head and leads the rhythm section away to some kind of out, open space... then horn lines come back in, back to finger-snapping hard swinging, then... out again... Miles then jumps in on this tension, stomping all over the contrasts with burning lines that define gravity, followed by some of Shorter's most intense soloing ever... just staggering, masterful music...

Playlist, Week of 2020-09-06

The end of summer, and the listening's good... Although Bird shows up a lot randomly on the Magic Jukebox 2, it's been good to delve a little deeper... the Dean Benedetti box set is really amazing, and the somewhat low fidelity doesn't bother me a bit... those damn solos!... and nice to hear Bird's treatment of lesser-recorded songs like "Byas a Drink" and "It's the Talk of the Town"... a real time capsule... Jumping ahead to just last year, great to hear Ingrid Laubrock playing Anthony's Braxton Zim Music... in my spare time, I'd like to compare this to the London run of Zim Music from May of 2018... My old original Beatles records from when I was a kid still sound damn solid... they just leap out of the grooves and grab you... they still haven't let go after all these years...

Playlist, Week of 2020-08-30

I'm a sucker for that Canterbury keyboard sound, that almost-schlocky horror movie organ sound exemplified by Mike Ratledge and Dave Sinclair... it's in heavy evidence in the work of Dave Stewart on Hopper Tunity Box... Stewart cleaned his sound up for his stint with Bruford... while his playing is nice there, I prefer the dirtier sound of his playing with Hatfield and the North and National Health (the first two albums, anyway)... I like the pairing of Derek Bailey with the Ruins, but I think I prefer the Ruins on their own... perversely, their insanity is rather curbed with the addition of Bailey... Some great pop on the new Lemon Twigs album... I can tell it's one of those records that will bear up to repeated listening... I guess I can't avoid the hype, but it is fun picking through the lists and stories about Charlie Parker these days... he still sounds astounding... this is a good list... I hear a lot of Morton Feldman in Tyshawn Sorey... I am enjoying going back through some of my old Blue Note reissue albums... they just sound fantastic...

Playlist, Week of 2020-08-16

And Other Desert Towns may be my favorite Ingrid Laubrock/Tom Rainey duo record, if only because so much of Laubrock's sax playing is so aggressive on it... stay tuned... Would love to hear more from the quartet configuration that produced Tism... I was initially put off by the slowed-down vocal effects and the pseudo-religious crap Prince insists on spouting (well, I still am), but there are some great grooves on The Rainbow Children, and it's much stronger than I initially gave it credit for... The Stones' Satanic Majesties Request may not be their best album, but it's certainly my favorite... especially on the two "Sing This All Together" jams, they tapped into something tribal, psychedelic, and grooving all at the same time, something they managed to avoid afterwards but which I can't get enough of... Ruins is just insane... Teddy Wilson or Bud Powell?... why not both?
