Playlist, Week of 2024-09-01

Found a nice used copy of Pete La Roca Sims' LP Turkish Women at the Bath (in the version released under Chick Corea's name, Bliss!), featuring some choice John Gilmore... always interesting to hear Gilmore in a non-Sun Ra context, although I still maintain that he did his best work with Ra... Someday I'll compile a list of favorite non-Ra Gilmore solos to go along with my other Gilmore list...

  1. What's up with RAIC from Richmond? Is that band still active? What are those players doing? Great sounds on that La Roca album, Chick Korea during a very interesting time in his development.

  2. Re: Corea: yeah I wish he had stuck more to this vein than the more florid stuff. Re: RAIC: you know, I don't know. Sam Goff ("the other Sam") is still in town as far as I know, but I believe Abdul Hakim-Bilal moved away. I see Laura Marina around town and I know Erik Schroeder is still playing, but don't know any details, sorry.
