Playlist, Week of 2026-06-21

[Ahmed] continues to kick my butt and engage my brain... The newest Zorn/Brian Marsella Trio strikes me as more of the same, but the same is so, so good... Love the strings on the one side of the Andrew Hill two-record set One for One... I wish he had explored those textures more... I have tbr (to be read) piles, but I also have tlt (to listen to) piles, and mine are constantly growing faster than time allows to work through them...

Playlist, Week of 2022-03-06

Love the Andrew Hill sides with the string quartet… it adds an extra dimension to an already rich and intoxicating music… While much of Henry Threadgill's early Zooid performances left me a bit cold (or rather, indifferent), I am really enjoying his last four or five studio recordings…. The Wayne Shorter quartet shows of the 2000s are endlessly fascinating… As much as I enjoy Miles Davis's late live shows (post-1981), I just can't get behind the dated and cheesy keyboard sounds…

Damn, but Andrew Hill is brilliant. Doesn't hurt that he's got John Gilmore on two albums here, playing at his absolute best outside the Arkestra. There's also Point of Departure. Damn.
