Prince slaughter 250.jpg

Wayne Shorter's '60s run of Blue Note albums is life-sustaining and essential... Prince's album The Slaughterhouse is one of his strongest of the 2000s, certainly more interesting than the major label releases like 3121 or Musicology... with "Y Should 👁 Do That When 👁 Can Do This?" he wears his Tower of Power heart on his sleeve... great grooves throughout and no MOR sappiness... It's great hearing an entire side of Clifford Jarvis cooking on drums with David Murray without his taking an extended solo (with which he slowed down so, so many Sun Ra concerts)...

Playlist, Week of 2020-04-19

Sam Goff's Transmissions continues to blow me away... One reason Keith Jarrett At The Blue Note is so enjoyable is that Keith Jarrett keeps his groaning and moaning to a minimum... it's still jarring to be enthralled with these absolutely gorgeous piano lines only to have them interrupted by him sounding like he has a ruptured spleen... The deep, robust tone of Sonny Rollins is like a soothing aural balm... Most of Bubble Puppy's only album is a bitter disappointment, surprisingly lame soft rock compared to the hard glittering brilliance of "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" and its B-side "Lonely"... oh well...

Playlist, Week of 2020-04-12

Even though it got its own side on Big Fun, I always felt "Ife" was kinda buried in the context of that album... the super-clean remastered version on the On the Corner box set is a revelation... I think this original studio version is stronger than the subsequent live reworkings, which focused mostly on the killer bass line... Speaking of killer, the two live sets of Fire! Orchestra that recently appeared are just that, monumental presentations of most of the material from Arrival... The music of Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi group is a deep well that merits continual revisiting... Jewel in the Lotus is one of the best Hancock albums not appearing under his own name... Love hearing Eddie Prévost's free jazz drumming in a non-AMM context like the Steve Miller Trio... One thing about working from home is the luxury to play music a bit louder than I can at the office, can you tell?... and believe me, I am counting my blessings that I even have a home... stay healthy and safe out there, folks... I feel really lucky to have seen both the Muffins and Happy the Man in intimate settings back in the late '70s...
