Playlist, Week of 2021-07-25

Couple of weeks' gap there while I was on vacation... lots of good listening along the way, mostly Magic Jukebox playlists... lots of Beach Boys, Beatles, Pere Ubu, Elvis Costello, XTC... Over the next couple of weeks I am planning to do a deep dive into Charles Mingus... one logical extension from Duke Ellington... but for now it's just going to be more scattered...

Playlist, Week of 2021-07-04

What better way to celebrate July 4th than by this 1962 extravaganza from Duke Ellington?... with All American in Jazz, Ellington and Strayhorn take the music from a Broadway "hit" (was it? I'd never heard of it before this, but then again I don't follow Broadway) and make it their own... typically brilliant, and not as well-known as it should be... I really like Jeff Beck's playing on his first two solo albums, but Rod Stewart just doesn't do it for me... never has... I'll have way more to say about Anthony Braxton's Zim disc in future...
