New RAIC album "Gestalt"

I am proud to appear on two tracks on Gestalt, the newest CD from RAIC... one of the tracks, "The Intergalactic Church of Kirk," is a repurposed outtake from the Ask the Trees sessions... it was also chosen as a track for the latest Wire Tapper... the other track I am on, the title cut, is a 15-minute improvisational epic with three drummers: Samuel Goff, Scott Clark, and myself... the rest of the CD is pretty nifty as well... standout tracks include "Baroche" with Laura Morina on vocals, and the lovely country tune "Three Sides to the Story"... all told, four of the members of New Ting appear on several tracks... 

Playlist, Week of 2019-09-15

Excellent new 2-CD set from RAIC... the plan: gather together a bunch of musicians from different bands and backgrounds all day in a studio, put all their names in a hat, draw names for impromptu improvs... the plan works brilliantly, and there is an overall feel and consistency to the entire set, in spite of the random variations and combinations of players... (full disclosure: I was invited to participate, but the timing didn't work out for me... my loss!!!)... Some excellent playing from Craig Taborn on The People I Love... I am also really digging the tight drum work of Damion Reid...

New RAIC Single

I think this is only temporarily available, so check it out fast! Stillness is a single from saxophonist Erik Schroeder's  RAIC session this past March. Not sure when the album is coming out. It was a pleasure to delve into a kind of late-Coltrane free spiritual jazz mode for this.

New RAIC Release: Multiplicity

RAIC has a new release put out by Thirsty Leaves Music and on Bandcamp: Multiplicity. I am pleased to appear on the first track. It's a large-ensemble planned improvisation by Samuel Goff, structured in three parts. It was mighty fun to play, and nice to hear the finished version! I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of the recording.

The RAIC recording session I participated in last October is now on Bandcamp for free download (for a limited time) and streaming. Balance of the Three will eventually be part of an album to be released this spring, but for now it's up as a single. Check it out!

RAIC in the Studio

RAIC was in Etching Tin Studio over the weekend, and Samuel Goff invited me to join RAIC for the session to perform "Balance of the Three" (the piece we played at WRIR back in February). The session turned out great, and we got a nice recording, which should show up at some point on a RAIC release. Ten musicians, including three drummers! Here are some photos:

RAIC Release "Lovers Never Leave" Now on Bandcamp

Lovers Never Leave is a new album by RAIC, now streaming and available for download on Bandcamp. It consists of two sessions I was happy to participate in: a live performance at Sound of Music Studios (video here) and a session at the Harry Partch Appreciation Society practice space (more audio from that session here). RAIC Gig at WRIR Party This Friday

I am pleased to be playing with RAIC (Richmond Avant Improv Collective) this Friday at WRIR's 2017 Party for the Rest of Us. It's a large ensemble, with three drummers, three saxes, two guitars, bass, and cello (see the full lineup here). We're going on first, at roughly 7, and we're playing on the main stage. There will be a rough outline for our 25 minute-ish set, and the rehearsals have been fun and invigorating. Here's a shot from last night's; that's my kit on the far left. That's Jimmy on sax.
