Playlist, Week of 2023-08-27

In addition to my Duke-Dead-Braxton-Cecil-Ra-Mingus listening spree, I have also been fitting in lots of Sparks... they've been on a major roll since 1994's Gratuitous Sax & Senseless Violins... the new album, The Girl Is Crying in Her Latte,  is typical only in its sharp pop brilliance... On the Dead front, I find myself mostly stuck in the early '70s these days... they were just so much better with only one drummer (the awesome, mind-blowing Bill Kreutzmann)...

Playlist, Week of 2023-08-20

Still deep into my Braxton/Cecil/Dead/Duke/Mingus/Sun Ra dive... That doesn't mean I can't enjoy other stuff as well... Case in point: Notes on a Century, the new album by OCON (Colin OCon, one-third of Dark Carpet)... an attractive mix of psychedelia, country funk, and exotica, vaguely reminiscent at times of Shuggie Otis's Inspiration Information... OCON plays almost all the instruments all the time... nice drumming, strong psyched-out guitar... extra vocals on three tracks by Jefferson Pilot... definitely worth checking out...

Playlist, Week of 2023-08-06

I am quite taken with Alex Ward's playing... he is equally adept at guitar and clarinet, and has fascinating improvisatory skills on both... Still on my Sun Ra-Cecil Taylor-Charles Mingus-Grateful Dead-Duke Ellington-Anthony Braxton kick! Enough there for a few lifetimes... well, I only have one, so better get back to listening...
