Playlist, Week of 2020-08-30

I'm a sucker for that Canterbury keyboard sound, that almost-schlocky horror movie organ sound exemplified by Mike Ratledge and Dave Sinclair... it's in heavy evidence in the work of Dave Stewart on Hopper Tunity Box... Stewart cleaned his sound up for his stint with Bruford... while his playing is nice there, I prefer the dirtier sound of his playing with Hatfield and the North and National Health (the first two albums, anyway)... I like the pairing of Derek Bailey with the Ruins, but I think I prefer the Ruins on their own... perversely, their insanity is rather curbed with the addition of Bailey... Some great pop on the new Lemon Twigs album... I can tell it's one of those records that will bear up to repeated listening... I guess I can't avoid the hype, but it is fun picking through the lists and stories about Charlie Parker these days... he still sounds astounding... this is a good list... I hear a lot of Morton Feldman in Tyshawn Sorey... I am enjoying going back through some of my old Blue Note reissue albums... they just sound fantastic...

Playlist, Week of 2020-08-16

And Other Desert Towns may be my favorite Ingrid Laubrock/Tom Rainey duo record, if only because so much of Laubrock's sax playing is so aggressive on it... stay tuned... Would love to hear more from the quartet configuration that produced Tism... I was initially put off by the slowed-down vocal effects and the pseudo-religious crap Prince insists on spouting (well, I still am), but there are some great grooves on The Rainbow Children, and it's much stronger than I initially gave it credit for... The Stones' Satanic Majesties Request may not be their best album, but it's certainly my favorite... especially on the two "Sing This All Together" jams, they tapped into something tribal, psychedelic, and grooving all at the same time, something they managed to avoid afterwards but which I can't get enough of... Ruins is just insane... Teddy Wilson or Bud Powell?... why not both?

Playlist, Week of 2020-08-09

Old friends, new friends... old: revisiting Muhal Richard Abrams's brilliant big band albums...  the sublime Duke Ellington and two '50s classics... "49 Bye-Byes," one of my favorite CS&N songs... Art Ensemble's "Ninth Room"... new: Ingrid Laubrock and Kris Davis on their first duo recording... getting into early Clifford Brown... maybe more old than new here, but it's all good... and I am finding myself, as always, deeply moved by how varied and satisfying "jazz" (in all its permutations) can be... I mean, damn, Clifford Brown was amazing... as was Benny Goodman, especially the small group stuff with Charlie Christian and Fletcher Henderson... Am enjoying exploring the quite esoteric but beautifully otherwordly music of Alice Coltrane... The Milestone records of Joe Henderson... that particular late-night Latin-y feel... The massive Cecil Taylor big band recordings from "Cecil Taylor in Berlin"...The orchestrated structural improvs of Sun Ra's "Fireside Chat with Lucifer"...  It's all so nourishing and moving...
