Playlist, Week of 2020-10-11

Live at Montreux is one of the all-time greatest Sun Ra records... the whole band's firing on all cylinders, and I love how he integrates acoustic piano with synthesizer... "New World a-Comin'" is an underappreciated (by me, anyway) long-form composition by Duke Ellington, featuring a lot of solo piano... it was recorded several times, but it looks like the only versions I have are a Treasury show from 1946 and a 1945 version on the relatively obscure LP Jazz of the World War 2nd... I feel like I'm slowly working more post-1945 Duke into my listening regime... I may need to reread Eddie Lambert's excellent book Duke Ellington: A Listener's Guide soon... Any record with Ingrid Laubrock or Kris Davis on it is golden... Besides Henry Kaiser's and Wadada Leo Smith's Yo Miles reconstructions, Dave Douglas's Freak In is one of the best explorations of Miles Davis's 1970-1975 sonic territory... it passed me by when it first came out, and I got led to it by the appearance of Craig Taborn... good stuff!
