Playlist, Week of 2020-05-10

Ingrid Laubrock and Tom Rainey have continued to release weekly updates to their Stir Crazy series of duos recorded during isolation... these recordings are wonderful... visceral, immediate, and alive... One of the most amazing sets of recordings I've been digging into recently is Matana Roberts's Coin Coin series... she is up to 4 of a projected 12 chapters, and each one so far is mindblowingly original... hypnotic horn lines and mesmerizing vocals charged with a unique mix of folk, trad jazz, bluegrass, and gospel transmogrified into avant-garde jazz of the highest order, imbued with a deeply mysterious sense of history and a mysticism that is unlike anything else I've heard... her singing voice is so appealing, and her sax playing very intense... there's so much going on that it's hard to imagine how she will top these first four chapters... a massive achievement...
