Playlist, Week of 2018-12-30
Happy new year to everyone! Inspired by the Art Ensemble of Chicago biography, I am beginning to delve back into their amazing discography.... and continuing to be blown away by Craig Taborn... the Flaga set is a brilliant showcase for his acoustic piano playing, and it's got some of the best drumming by Tyshawn Sorey I've heard yet... speaking of him, the new Tyshawn Sorey album promises to be amazing... I've only had time to play the first disc (of three!) so far, and the textures and moods of that disc are sumptuous and beguiling... can't wait to check out the rest... didn't realize Joe Morris was on it... Also exciting is the new Insurrection disc... lotsa killer guitar work!... Continuing to explore the new Beach Boys digital releases of alternate takes, backing tracks, and other goodies from 1968... nice to hear "My Little Red Book" finally officially released... Brian really puts his heart and soul into that one!

Playlist, Week of 2018-12-09
I find that I like to have some kind of game plan in my listening... still leaves lots of room for serendipity... hence my working through the discography of Craig Taborn... the David Binney and Chris Potter albums were new to me... not as much Taborn as I would have liked!... next week I'll start working through several live performances of his with David Torn... And hence my going through all the Anthony Braxton recordings I have with Mary Halvorson... And hence my digging into the Mosaic box of Duke Ellington Reprise recordings... Lots of gems in there, even some of the Mary Poppins material... Ellington and Billy Strayhorn spun gold from dross for years... Had a wonderful trio session with cellist Gary Rouzer and Jimmy Ghaphery over the weekend... for inspiration, he suggested checking out the Tr!o recording, which is really nice... Still absorbing the sessions with Rodger Coleman... conceptualizing potential albums... Had an opportunity to sit down with my brother and check out some of the new Dark Carpet material... rocking as always.... waiting for that next album!... As always, I feel behind in my listening....

Focusing on working my way through the two days' worth of recordings we did in Nashville.... it always takes a while to fully absorb these long, monstrous improvisations... As a result, slowing down a bit on the Craig Taborn trail... will get back to that soon... I'm also starting to revisit (relatively) recent Anthony Braxton recordings, especially ones with Mary Halvorson... The Alex Ward large ensemble recording is superlative... I really dug his clarinet playing on Alexander Hawkins' Unit[e]...

Continuing my slow romp through the discography of Craig Taborn... his contributions to the pair of Transatlantic Art Ensemble ECM discs by Roscoe Mitchell and Evan Parker are crucial... his self-effacing playing on David Torn's Prezens is harder to tease out... I am looking forward to revisiting the several live recordings I have from the Torn 2007 and 2008 European shows... Adam Shatz does a great job of trying to capture the elusive quality of Taborn's art in his lengthy article on him in the New York Times... Shatz also reaffirms my sense that Avenging Angel is a masterwork...

Always great checking in with my friend Cal and listening to vinyl on his amazing sound system... Miles and XTC... the Steven Wilson remix of English Settlement is particularly incredible... so much is revealed, it's brighter and denser, the drums are clearer and more powerful, and the vocals are razor-sharp... I always thought that album was one of their muddiest-sounding, so this just sounds so much better... the mixes of the new vinyl versions of the last two XTC albums sound closer to my ears to the original CD releases than the Apple Vinyls mixes did...

Listening to Randy Porter's wonderful work with improvising schoolchildren (The Saga of Padani) reminded me of his early CD with The Manufacturing of Humidifers, Dire Images of Beauty... it's a fun romp through a series of skronky and engaging improvs and quirky compositions... it was great fun to dig this out again; it had been a while... in addition to Porter's inventive guitar playing, it also features the exciting sax work of Dan Plonsey, a major contributor to the Sun Ra Satur listserv back in the early days of the interwebs... Plonsey also appears on Anthony Braxton's Nine Compositions (DVD) 2003...

New Ting Ting Loft
Eddie Prévost's description of his trio can apply equally well, I think to New Ting Ting Loft. New Ting
quite intuitively ... works in a subtle, attentive way: examining what the music is and where it is going all within the process of playing; feeling the very weight of the sounds; measuring each contribution and placing sounds to be complementary and in contrast to other sounds; feeling the stuff of the instruments, and sensing the presence of other creative beings. This is part of the extraordinary and gloriously uncertain matrix of what making and listening to music should be about. These qualities signify what makes for positive, purposeful and creative human relationships. If they are not to be found in a music, then I reckon it is found wanting. (Eddie Prévost, "Touch: the weight, measure and feel of things," liner notes to Eddie Prévost Trio, Touch, 1997)

Continuing with my journey through the discography of Craig Taborn... which is leading to lots of interesting detours... especially Dave Douglas' Freak In, a 1970s-Miles-drenched album I'd missed... excellent Taborn Fender Rhodes solo on "Traveler There Is No Road"... Also enjoying digging deeper into AMM, especially after the magnificent new release An Unintended Legacy... The Anthony Braxton New Braxton House Bandcamp site continues to crank out amazing releases... Another new gem is the Oakland Elementary School Arkestra CD The Saga of Padani... elementary school kids playing improvisations and Sun Ra tunes... I have always loved Randy Porter's contribution to the Sun Ra tribute CD Wavelength Infinity ("Planet Earth") but never managed to track down Big Music, Little Musicians, the first album he put out featuring these amazing children... this new release features the best of that and a subsequent cassette-only release, and is well worth checking out... a few tunes feature Marshall Allen sitting in with them... much more honest and enthralling than anything you'll hear on the airwaves...

A few words about the new AMM 3-CD release An Unintended Legacy: it's wonderful... notable for the rejoining of guitarist Keith Rowe after an eleven-year absence, it's remarkable how much this sounds like he'd never left... and yet there is an advancement of sorts, or a difference, in how things unfold... the music is as mysterious and subtle as ever before, and there is a subdued statis that is meditative and lovely... even so, it's great to hear the Beach Boys insinuate themselves into the fray, on the first disc... good thing it was Pet Sounds and not M.I.U. Album... not sure that selection was as random as Rowe's radio interjections were in the past, but it works...

Eddie Prévost on Sun Ra
Eddie Prévost on Sun Ra:
Jazz has often been in an unwittingly innocent postmodern state due to its references to the past--by way of the popular song--and unprepossessing self-referencing "quoting." Much of what I have heard of the New York based Lincoln Center project, curated and produced by Wynton Marsalis, falls into a more self-conscious category. This initiative is aggressively postmodern, suggesting a self-satisfied stasis happy to consolidate the innovative gains of the "jazz masters."Contrast this with the wildly confident, uninhibited, unconventional output of Sun Ra: cod-Egyptology and fantastic sci-fi interwoven with joyous popular song; shades of free music together with big band jazz in a circus extravaganza; an -ism-busting complex whose archness audaciously defied categorization; an otherworldly postmodernism unconcerned with market motives. With extravagant costumes and fantastic ideology as soul-preserving strategies, the Arkestra remained firmly outside of the newly emerging black, middle class aspirational nexus. Sun Ra proved to be an exceptional exception. The general ethos of jazz now fully embraces the need to be understood and popular: it measures success by how well it commands the market. (Eddie Prévost, "Confronting a Darkening World: AMM at 50 years--An Aesthetic Memorandum," in Critical Studies in Improvisation, 11:1-2 (2017), pp. 6-7.

Playlist, Week of 2018-09-30
I am starting an informal (and not necessarily chronological) romp through the discography of Craig Taborn (at least through what I have access to)... as I think back on my experience at the Big Ears Festival earlier this year, besides Roscoe Mitchell and Evan Parker the musician whose performances I find myself ruminating over the most is Taborn... I missed his quartet, which was on the one day I wasn't there, but he shined in sets with Rocket Science, the Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble, and Roscoe Mitchell... I was especially impressed by two things: his super-sensitive approach to the piano with Rocket Science, presenting a lyrical counterpoint to the atonal flutterings of Sam Pluta's electronics and Peter Evans' trumpet, and his majestic electronics statement as part of the huge Roscoe Mitchell Bells for the South Side ensemble... Taborn's earliest recording, James Carter's JC on the Set, places him firmly in the jazz quartet tradition, albeit one that's stretched inside and out both by Carter's stylistic breadth and by his choice of material, which ranges from Don Byas and Duke Ellington to Sun Ra and three seasoned originals... Taborn proves himself as comfortable as Carter is with both taking it out and grooving on the inside... he continues this multi-faceted approach on Conversin' with the Elders... it's partially this versatility, I think, that so attracts me to his playing, and his career ever since has thrived on this multiplicity of approaches... he can hold his own in the Cecil Taylor arena, he can swing with the best of them, and he is equally adept with electronics in both the noise sphere (Junk Magic) and the fusion sphere (Dave Holland's Prism)...

Playlist, Week of 2018-09-23
Daniel Barbiero's new trio release with Ken Moore and Dave Vosh is wonderful.... check out the Avant Music News review here... I obviously don't have a problem with the "repetitive sequencer driven drivel that is currently being produced by so many contemporary musicians using analog and modular synths" that the reviewer disdains here, but I do also appreciate the understated, almost naked use of analog synths here, and Dan's bass playing , as always, is superb... a real treat... Balancing the new with the comfortable, I find that absorbing new music is an ongoing task... there's just so much of it, and no time for the repeated close-listening sessions of my youth... so for me the "comfortable" is relegated to the Magic Jukebox, while extended listening is reserved for newer stuff.. this isn't a hard and fast rule, though... in fact, there really aren't any rules in my listening... I'm just rambling... the mind is a strange thing, though... why else would it summon up, on a recent two-week trip away from music, out of nowhere really, since I hadn't listened to it for ages, the Genesis song "Can-Utility and the Coastliners?"... I mean, why that one?... anyway, I of course dug out Foxtrot as soon as I got back home, and was rewarded immensely with that beautifully strange masterpiece... god knows what they're on about lyrically but damn, Phil Collins' drumming is excellent... At some point I'll have to do a side-by-side comparison of all the Cecil Taylor/Anthony Braxton live performances, but I think the 2007-10-13 set from Reggio Emilia may be the most exciting... it's certainly aggressive, with Braxton weighing in heavily on both alto and sopranino...

Playlist, Week of 2018-08-19
Alexander Hawkins' piano playing on A Night Walking Through Mirrors is wonderful... the future of jazz piano is safe with Hawkins, Kris Davis, Craig Taborn, and Agustí Fernandez... Taborn's work on The Bell is hypnotic and sublime... Back in the early '80s, a group of people called the Richmond Artists Workshop put together a fantastic series of performances in Richmond... they brought in Fred Frith (twice, once solo and once with Phil Minton) and Henry Kaiser (solo and with members of the Orthotonics and the Muffins)... the highlight for me, though, was Wadada Leo Smith in a beautifully contemplative trio set with Peter Kowald and Bobby Naughton... hard to imagine a series of that magnitude happening here these days...

Playlist, Week of 2018-08-12
Really enjoying my third time through the 1972 Dark Star extravaganza... it's fun to dip into these extended improvisations totally out of context... of course, it's also great to listen to them totally in context, which I'll return to at some point in the future.... I came across a reference to Catatumbo on Ingrid Laubrock's website, hadn't heard it yet...a nice free improv trio, with her sax playing being typically inspiring... Always nice to return to Sun Ra's masterpiece When Angels Speak of Love... besides Gilmore (of course), the standout player for me on this is the under-recorded Walter Miller on trumpet...

A Typically Perfect Pynchon Sentence
Jim Henderson. Looking north up Broadway at the Apthorp on a cloudy afternoon.
Just one random perfect sentence from Bleeding Edge:
She squints past roofline contours, vents, skylights, water tanks and cornices under this pre-storm lighting, shining as if already wet against the darkening sky, down the street to where the cursed Deseret rears above Broadway, one or two storm-nervous lights already on, its stonework at this distance seeming too uncleansable, its shadows too many, ever to breach. Shout-out to Scott Brookman and Yani Martinelli's new release... nice new batch of tunes, with Yani and friends augmenting phone videos of Scott playing guitar and singing... international cross-pollination!... Both Directions at Once is solid '63 Coltrane... I despise the crappy hype that has surrounded this release; these sessions were never planned as an album, "lost" or otherwise... the new compositions are wonderful... great to hear multiple studio versions of "Impressions," although none of them approach the barn-burning intensity of any of the '61 live versions... The new Parliament album is underwhelming... some nice stuff, sure, but I'm missing the funk... the P-Funk.. the bomb...
