New Issue of Sound American Devoted to Anthony Braxton
The latest issue of Nate Wooley's excellent online journal Sound American is devoted to Anthony Braxton. It's an amazing issue. It focuses on the last two decades of Braxton's work, including essays on the Ghost Trance Music, Pine Top Aerial Music, Echo Echo Mirror House Music, the Trillium Operas, and so much more. There's a generous helping of views of Braxton's scores and advice on how to interpret them, as well as numerous sound files that help illustrate the various concepts. It's a wealth of Braxtonia!

Sound Row No. 7
I am pleased to present some recordings of "Sound Row No. 7," a composition by Daniel Barbiero. It took me a while to get my act together on this one. I didn't really have a recording device until I finally got a smartphone. And the score calls for a bow, which is not part of my arsenal. I was able to borrow one from Ben Scott of New Ting Ting Loft. Bowing is definitely not my forte...I'd need a few years to practice. That being said, it was fun to try to coax some sounds of a Chinese cymbal and a smaller (maybe 4-inch diameter) cymbal I have.
Here are some shots of the original score:
This was definitely a challenge! Keeping all the components straight and trying not to make any noise in between parts was tricky. You can hear my drum stool squeak at times, but hey, that's all part of the "individual body responses of the performer," right?
Here are some shots of the original score:
And here's what I came up with: a short version and two longer versions.

Playlist, Week of 2016-09-04
I think when I got this LP in the early '70s, at the time it was because I was curious about Jamie Muir from King Crimson. I didn't understand the record then, but I didn't get rid of it....so glad I didn't! It was like something inside me made me realize I'd be ready for it in future....
