Playlist, Week of 2020-03-29
The Night of the Purple Moon continues to be one of my all-time favorite Sun Ra records... warmth and generosity of spirit suffused through electricity and John Gilmore on drums... loving this: Ingrid Laubrock and Tom Rainey are releasing duet streams from their home: Stir Crazy... I really miss the last couple of minutes missing from the stereo version of The Magic City... Amazing rediscovery: The Call by Mal Waldron... have had that album for years but had not given it the attention it deserves... dug it up this week and whoa! not an acoustic piano in sight... it's all electric piano, plus organ... dreamy and unique...

The Past Recaptured
I thought I had lost this forever! This is my original copy of the "Magic Juke Box" EP from my childhood: a strange and unsettling excursion into sleep and music, and of course the inspiration for the name I've given my iPods. The cover is long gone. The missing chunk also broke off long, long ago, way before I started using this in UYA. Place this on top of an album, put the needle in the missing chunk, and you've got a noisy loop. When I packed up all my records and moved back to Richmond from Boston, I couldn't find this among all the other UYA vinyl sources for turntable improvisations (a collection in and of itself) and I thought it gone forever. So imagine my surprise when I pulled out the album Hear the Beatles Tell All and out rolled Howdy Doody!

Old Times Good Times
...the fact that I can't understand people who want to go over and over old times, getting all nostalgic and stuff, the fact that I'm scared of old times, the fact that old times are soggy, saggy cradles of regret... (Lucy Ellmann, Ducks, Newburyport, p. 57)

Tyshawn Sorey at UVA
Went to Charlottesville last Friday for a performance by Tyshawn Sorey. It was billed as a concert, but beyond that I didn't really know what to expect--would he have a band? Would he play a mix of drums, piano, and trombone? He's equally adept on all three. Turns out it was a solo piano piece, a "spontaneous composition," as the program stated. Turns out it was amazing. The setting was a Unitarian church, and the lighting was minimal: one small lamp on top of the piano, which, about five minutes in, Sorey turned off, to pay the rest of the piece in darkness. He started off with long drawn-out Morton Feldman-esque low-end chords, sparsely scattered and somber. The chords built on themselves and morphed into an hour-long rumination of dynamic power shifts, including some of the fastest post-Cecil Taylor runs I've ever heard. These powerful runs grew in intensity to loud crescendo waves of thunderous swells only to be cut off and dynamically cut to sequences of quiet melodic chords. This pattern of a gradual build to overwhelming power/quick cut to quiet melody occurred several times as the piece progressed. Stunning.

It's always interesting to hear AMM bring in outside players... I'm thinking particularly of their recordings with John Butcher... it puts into focus exactly how singular, how sui generis their playing together always is... AAMM is no exception--even with the addition of the "A" Trio, you never once doubt that you're hearing anyone other than AMM...
