Playlist, Week of 2020-01-26

I was happy to have this 7-record box of Jelly Roll Morton in the days before CDs... after re-listening to an LP from this set, I have to say: thank god for JSP... those Jelly CDs remastered by John R.T. Davies from pristine 78s are so much clearer... that being said, the albums are serviceable and would do in a pinch... The new OOIOO is awesome, more about that later...

Playlist, Week of 2020-01-19

Arrival just keeps getting better and better every time I hear it... the beautiful vocals are offset by the abstract electronics settings, the intense bass clarinet, and Mats Gustafsson's incredible sax playing... some of the most abstract and moving playing I've heard from him... just stunning... Meanwhile, getting my progrocks off with Henry Cow, Gentle Giant, and the Muffins... god bless the seventies!

Time and Music

Time interacts in numerous ways with our perception of a piece of music: the circumstances—macro and micro—of our first and subsequent hearings; the duration and intensity of our listening; the seemingly ceaseless improvisation of memory. In a different way, there’s also the specific impact in time and a work’s general reception, its scale and assessment. --Stuart Broomer, "Eric Dolphy - Musical prophet: The Expanded 1963 New York Studio Sessions," Free Jazz Collective 2019-02-04

Image result for muffins 185"

I'd forgotten how wonderfully weird the Muffins LP <185> is... their only one produced by Fred Frith... evidently the CD has two versions, one less Frith-icized... will need to check that out... I actually like what he did on this; the sound is warped and layered... Speaking of Frith, I am getting more into Dagmar Krause's vocals than I ever have before... she's certainly an acquired taste, but her voice is a perfect fit for the strident politics of Henry Cow... I need to dig out my Art Bears records...

Reading List, Week of 2020-01-12

Well, I finished it. I didn't know what I was in for when I requested this book from inter-library loan. I mean, I knew it was long (almost 1500 pages) but I was unprepared for its sheer weight (both metaphorical and literal--13 pounds!). See here and here for some page samples and a good description of what I got into. I think I followed it, mostly, but I don't know what I think about it. It's certainly more of a back-breaker than a page-turner, heh heh. Anyway, after that, I'm not going to shy away from rereading Finnegans Wake again!

Image result for henry cow box redux discogs

A bang-up Christmas: a new turntable from my lovely wife, and lots of musical goodies as well.... including the magnificent Henry Cow box set... the remastering of Leg End is astounding, really... sounds sooo much better than it ever has before... Also finally able to play the Beatles Christmas records box that Rodger gave me a few years ago, which I'd not played due to turntable problems... again, the best they've ever sounded, and definitely some of the best Christmas "music" ever... Crimble! And a very New Year!
