I see a very close correspondence between composing with timbre and abstract painting—it’s a natural connection to make, I think. The same sorts of relationships that define pictorial plasticity—the dynamic interrelationships of color and shape, or the interactions of negative and positive spaces in an abstract painting for example—have their analogues in a musical composition or performance. 15 Questions with Daniel Barbiero
Be sure and check out the 15 Questions interview with Daniel Barbiero. It's a fascinating look into Dan's practice and methodology in his composing and playing. Dan's one of the most thoughtful people I know, and his love of music permeates the interview. He's also nice enough to mention New Ting Ting Loft and yours truly.
Dan is also hard to keep up with! I just discovered a release of his from May that somehow slipped through the cracks for me: All Things Aligned, a collaboration with Chris Lynn based on field recordings and Dan's beautiful bass playing. I'll try to do better about keeping up, Dan.

No, I'm not an actor--but this book presents a great perspective on how to make the language come alive on stage, and is worth reading both for its close analysis of meter and phrasing and for the long section on soliloquies.

oralhistory
Exciting new release from bandmate Jimmy Ghaphery. No sax this time: it's all manipulated sound, with the sources being the interludes between sentences from oral histories old and new. It's a fascinating concept, and it works really well, especially when the manipulation gets heavy (the so-called "timely" tracks). Abstract, jarring, and yet soothing at the same time. Check it out!

David Thomson is my second-favorite writer on film. I don't write much about movies on this blog, but I do watch, and I enjoy reading about watching.
My favorite writer on film is my good friend Gordon Thomas, whose masterful new article on The Birth of a Nation has just appeared in Bright Lights Film Journal. Gordon's writing is always thoughtful and provocative, and this lengthy exploration is no exception.

The Nature of Books
A book gives great responsibility to our participation and commitment: reading keeps us awake and it maintains the forward motion of the text. The very nature of the book tends to emphasize the privacy and purpose of reading. Its nature is to build introspection, the way exercise improves a muscle. (David Thomson, How to Watch a Movie, 2015, p. 216)
